Understanding Rogerian Method With Congruent Counselors California

By Michael Evans

When it comes to therapy, one of the most important aspects in the Rogerian method is that of congruency. As such, Congruent counselors California often use a person centered approach. In this style counseling, client and counselor get to know one another as equal partners. After which, it can often be easier for the two to be open and honest with one another.

Authentic, Genuine, these two words basically have the same meaning. Whether related to experience, lifestyle, sexual orientation or other issues, these professionals often work from an authentic point of view. As such, clients get to know these individuals far better than most others get to know those working in other areas of counseling and therapy.

In most cases, therapists using this style of counseling allow clients to experience the internal and external experiences of the counselor. Known as the Rogerian approach, it is very popular among individuals whom believe in living in the present moment. Basically, the counselor is working from an authentic position rather than hiding personal details or issues. As a result, the client and counselor get to know each other for whom each is as a person.

Core conditions in this method include being empathetic to the needs and understanding of the client, unconditional approval and praise, and demonstrating congruency throughout the counseling process. In addition, providing support as a professional and friend during the term of the relationship is also a big aspect of this method.

In using this person-centered approach, therapists and clients often build a great deal of trust and understanding. As with other therapies, individuals need respect counselors privacy just as counselors need to respect clients. For, while the terminology may be different when it comes to referring to client's versus patients, confidentiality and privacy still need remain in tact.

Unlike other therapies and treatment, this type also allows the individual to eliminate and overcome challenges and obstacles rather than providing healing. As such, the therapist and client are equal partners with the therapist teaching the individual how to eliminate these issues over time. After which, individuals can often use the tools one learned in therapy to avoid needing therapy for similar issues in the future.

By living in the present moment and addressing current issues, individuals can avoid allowing resentment and other negative energies to build up over time. In addition, by focusing on the present and future rather than dwelling on past issues, it can often be easier to find a resolution. Whereas, when dwelling on past issues, individuals often have to spend a great deal more time in therapy to determine the root cause of a problem, then how that cause might be treated rather than eliminated.

In most cases, this method is akin to peer-to-peer counseling which was popular in the 1990s. While this is the case, there are still some differences. For example, while in peer-to-peer counseling, one side only listens. In this method, client and counselor share a two way street in which the discussion is shared equally among the two. After which, it can often be easier to locate more options when it comes to overcoming a challenge or obstacle.
