Why A Face Sun Cream Is Essential

By Haywood Hunter

Many years ago it was very unfashionable to have a suntanned face. A tan meant that you were a peasant who worked outside all day. The rich had to have pale, flawless skin to show their higher status. It was only in the first half of the twentieth century and thanks to fashion designer Coco Chanel that tanned skin became popular. However, there are some serious health risks to tanning and to stay safe, you should invest in a good face sun cream.

You need a little bit of sun exposure for your skin to produce the vitamin D that your body needs for good bone health. The problem is that too much exposure can cause your skin to age more quickly. More serious is the increased risk of skin cancer. Some of the highest rates of skin cancer occur in countries like Australia and South Africa, where people of European descent are more at risk because of the sunny climate and closer proximity to the deteriorating ozone layer.

The culprits are ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun. There are two types. UVA rays affect the collagen levels in your skin and causes it to become less elastic, giving it a saggy, wrinkled appearance. UVB rays don't penetrate your skin as deeply as UVA rays, but they cause more serious damage. These are the rays that turn your skin brown or, if you're exposed to them for too long, to burn or even blister your epidermis. They also cause cancer of the skin. The best way to protect yourself is through a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

It is not advisable to use the same cream on your facial skin as you use on your body. The skin on your face is more sensitive and usually oilier too, so the cream you use on your body may be too rich. It's often because of this that people tend to skip cream on their faces altogether.

Apply facial sunscreen over your moisturizer when you perform your beauty routine in the morning. You should reapply throughout the day, about half an hour before you're going to be outside. Be sure that it's applied thickly enough to actually provide protection. A quarter to a third of a teaspoonful is usually sufficient for your face.

It's good to remember other basic tips too. Ultraviolet rays are strongest around midday, so if you can, stay indoors between ten in the morning and two in the afternoon. The harmful rays are also stronger the higher up you are or the closer you are to surfaces like water and snow that reflect sunlight. A broad-brimmed hat will help keep some of the rays off your skin.

Of course having very pale skin can make you look ill, which is why many people prefer a little bit of a glow. However, you don't need to risk your health to achieve the effect of looking healthy. A self-tanning cream can do wonders and if you prefer a quick fix, invest in some good bronzing powder or cream.

There are many different face sun creams on the market. Try out several until you find the one that works best for your skin and your lifestyle. It is an investment you'll never regret, since in the long run, prevention is much cheaper than cure.
