By Barbara Olson

Close reading is one of the methods you can use if you want to increase the level of how your children understand what they are reading. They can read several books or different materials without you being worried that they will not grasp a thing. Close reading increases your childs comprehension skills. Below are few tips to guide you in case you want to do effective 2nd grade close reading activities.

Note that the 2nd-grade students do not have a high concentration level, this being the case, you need to select short passages that they can quickly read through. However, it should be long enough to be meaningful. Note that if you make it too long, then the children will end up losing their focus.

The next thing you need to do is to make the focus more powerful. It is here that you should come up with a good side element and skills that will make the kid understand the activity. With the right element and skill, it is much possible for the kid to know the importance of this activity.

The other important thing to do is to ensure that the focus has extended from the passage and gone to other parts of the text that are being read. When the students start to notice or see the focus on the element or skill, it will be possible to find it all through the text. If you focus on one area for a long time, then you will be missing the chance to ensure they fully understand the lesson.

These students should also mark some text as they continue to read. The markup is done to help them understand the words and also ask questions concerning the marked words. This should be done every other time they have a chance to read.

One of an essential things is to ensure that the students discuss between the studying session so that they explain what they understand to each other. They should take note of the elements in the content and elaborate to each other. This way they will be able to share their ideologies and help each other understand.

As a teacher, you need to encourage the students to reread the text. When they do this, they need to make sure that they have a different focus. That way, you will be making it easy for them to look at every angle of the readings. As this skill grows, they will be able to interpret a text within no time since they will be able to look at different angles the first time that they read.

You also have to be patient with second-grade students. Since they take more time to get the picture of what the text is talking about, you should assist them in every way you can. You have to do this in a fun way so that you did not lose their attention. If they get bored with the process, they will not learn a thing is making the whole effort pointless. If you want your children to be smarter and take less time comprehending what they read, you should ensure that you try close reading. Also, make sure they understand the point of doing this so that they put in more focus.
