Looking For Umn Off Campus Housing

By Sandra Moore

When a student is accepted by a university many will need to leave home and find some suitable living accommodation. A large number of universities have student block accommodation on site but places are limited and they tend to fill up quickly. If you are looking for umn off campus housing there are some important things to think about and some care is needed before you make any decisions.

Before you start looking for somewhere to live you need to work out how much monthly rent you can afford. A small apartment will start from about six hundred dollars per calendar month and this will be unfurnished or in some cases part furnished. A three bed house will cost approximately fifteen hundred and gas, electric and water will usually be billed separately.

When you are looking for your accommodation it is useful to have a look at notice boards that are located around your university. Many boards will have adverts and cards for vacant student accommodation in the local area and the contact details for the letting agents or landlords. It may also be productive to speak to others who work and study at your university to ask for recommendations and advice.

Leaving the family home environment is often a very daunting experience for young students, and many will struggle to manage their monthly allowance and they will solve this by working multiple jobs. A useful way to reduce your outgoings is to split the bills and rent by taking in another student. Choosing this option means that all of the household bills are shared by the tenants and this takes away some of the financial pressures.

If you decide take rental accommodation is it very important to think about what household items you are going to need. Many properties are unfurnished and you will need to purchase items to make it homely. Another thing to consider is that along with the first months rent payment, agents will require a deposit against damages, which is refunded at the end of the tenancy if the property in good order.

Some of the large housing complexes that cater specifically for students will have extra facilities for their tenants use. Fitness centers, pools and communal reading areas are offered and internet access is also usually available. Other things such as cafes, bars and supermarkets maybe also be available which you may find useful.

The complexes that have student apartments and houses are usually close to the university and this is an advantage. It will save you substantial amounts of money each month by taking away the need to pay for transport. In some areas, where many students are living, a free transfer bus is provided by the university which is free of charge.

There is also another thing to think carefully about and this how long you are going to be staying in the property. Most real estate agents will require you to sign a six or twelve month tenancy on most properties. When your course is going to last for a few years, it may be a good financial decision to sign a longer lease, as it may bring down your total housing costs if you pay the rent as a lump sum in advance.
