Operational Contract Support: Considering Safety In The Work Environment

By Barbara Cooper

A priority to any employee is to maintain his own health and safety. Safety in the industrial work environment is especially important, as there are many hazards that they are exposed to. Adherence to the companies rules and Operational Contract Support are at the best interest of the employee.

Protective clothing is very important for the employee. For instance, a hard hat should be worn at all times when working under construction to avoid head injury should anything fall down. Hard hats are readily available at local builder stores with various colors to choose from. White hard hats are widely common.

In some industries, there are very loud machines. Earmuffs would protect your ears. Whether the sound is extreme or constant you would want to protect the ears from long-term noise abuse. When this is a requirement, the earmuffs should not be removed unless instructed that it is safe to do so. Some sounds are so loud, that if exposed a person could have complete loss of hearing and have to suffer to repercussions of living partially or fully deaf. Not worth the risk.

To protect the feet safety shoes must be worn at all times. It is not uncommon that employees easily slip on floors or downstairs when wet and have landed up with mild to critical injuries. Rubber soles generally provide good grip. The shoes are also tough and durable on top to protect the foot in case something had to fall or break on the feet. These shoes also protect the feet from long periods of standing or walking. Boots can provide all the same benefits but also protect from the knee down

Protective eyewear must be used if there is exposure to chemicals or sparks from welding. Again it is vital that the goggles remain over the eyes at all times working with these elements as one small mistake could lead to blindness. A blind or blurry vision would almost certainly mean that the employee would no longer be able to fulfill his work duties. There are technical goggles that provide great protection and comfort available at your local building supplier.

Then, of course, there are other security aspects to consider. The employee is responsible for his or her own mental alertness. Enough rest. Working with heavy machinery when a person is not at optimal alertness can prove to be fatal, just consider the implications of driving a car long distance without sleep. Does not end well.

The employee should also keep sober habits. Been on a shift under the influence of any substance be it alcohol or even prescription medication also inhibits reaction and response time. Blurry vision and unclear thinking could lead to hurting either himself or a colleague.

Employees are also responsible to keep or check their own stress levels. With stress levels, rising mistakes are easily made, or worse so aggression and augments can arise between colleagues which in itself poses a risk to everyone around. A poster listing the rules and the regulations should be displayed somewhere that all employees view on a daily basis. Regular drills and training must be conducted frequently to avoid unnecessary injury in the workplace.
