Tips Planning Your Harpeth River Kayak Adventure

By William Watson

Quite a lot of people want to escape the concrete urban jungles that they live in, hankering to get out into the Great Outdoors and meet with Mother Nature. Thus in this decade alone, quite a lot have gone on RV trips, hiking expeditions, camping trips and even kayaking. Should you be a person who wants to enjoy the love of nature using kayaks, then you may be partial to a Harpeth River Kayak river adventure or outing. Should this indeed be the case, then do read on in this article for more information before you decide.

Before you do make any plans it might be a good idea to have some form of checklist to help you out. This checklist will assist in keeping track of all the important elements of you trip so that you will not have any headaches later on. When it comes to planning trips it is usually recommended that you should use a checklist.

The very first thing that you want done is to do more research on the particular river that you want t o kayak on. It is good to know at first hand the length of the river, municipal and state designated entry points for kayak and canoe enthusiasts, and most importantly locations of water rapids and hazard areas, potential or otherwise. Initial research will show you that the Harpeth is a river together with the Ohio and Cumberland form part of the Mississippi watershed. You will also get to know that it is 155 miles long.

On average a kayaking trip with a bit of camping then it will last around two to three days. These three days will have its own fair share of medium to hard physical exertion so it is not really for the timid or faint of heart. If you are already in your forties, it may actually be a good idea to see you doctor first and see if they can clear you for tow to three days of fairly sustained exertion. This is particularly true if you have some sort of heart condition you are concerned about.

Next thing that you should look at should be how to look for an experienced guide in the area. Plenty of guides do exist so you may be hard pressed for a choice. However, do look for the guide that has the best track record in terms of safety and you cannot go wrong. Also hiring a locally bred talent is good also since he or she can add more color to you trip with local stories, histories, or even legends.

Assess your overall kayaking ability and also the ability of the group. If you and the group that you are traveling with are still basically novices, then you will need to stay and ply through calmer waters. This means you want to avoid rough patches of water such as where undertow and rapids occur. These areas are basically found in places where tributaries like the Little Harpeth south of the Nashville flow into the main waterway.

Prior to the trip and especially if you are travelling in a group, it is good to have a meeting beforehand. At this meeting do cove reach thing or activity that an individual wants so you can fit it into the whole group experience. By doing this you will make anyone feel left out and fell like they were forced to participate.

This article has thus shown some basic considerations to mull over before taking your kayak adventure. Other considerations will of course exist as regards equipment purchases and rentals and such, which is also something that you must research into further.
