The Uses Of Copper Finials

By Cynthia Green

A finial refers to an element that marks the end or top of some object. Usually, it is made to serve decorative purposes. Another name used to refer to finials is hip-knob. The term hip-knob finds use in several different fields, such as carpentry and architecture. In architecture, this term refers to a decorative device that is typical curved from stone and used to emphasize the apex of a tower, roof, gable, or dome. Below is useful information to know about copper finials.

The stress that hip-knob achieves could be integrated at the top, end, or corner of buildings and structures. When several hip-knobs are combined, the term pinnacles could be used. In these instances, the structure could have a similar size or they could also be different. There is no particular pattern or order for arranging pinnacles.

Also, one can apply hip-knobs on a much smaller scale. Here, they are applied in making decorative ornament at the ends or tops of rods or poles on products like tent-poles, curtain rods, bed posts, and clocks. Decorative hip-knobs are also applied to fasten lampshades. Also, the ends of handles of souvenir spoons may be made into finials.

The idea of finials is not a recent one. In fact, there are several instances where these structures were used in ancient Greek and Roman buildings. That means that the idea originated long before even ancient civilizations were founded. The earliest use of hip-knobs can be traced back to Asian cultures of around 700 A. D. Hip-knobs were used back then to decorate pagodas.

Trade is responsible for spreading this architecture to other regions of the world. The idea spread when Asians met and traded with individuals from other world regions. By the time Frenchmen were developing Gothic architecture, the idea of hip-knobs was already in existence and was incorporated into the architecture. The spread of the idea to the rest of Europe occurred from there. From that time, adoption has occurred worldwide.

Considering the various uses of hip-knobs, they can be made out of almost any type of material. They are made out of materials like metal, plastics, and wood in carpentry. Other materials used for making them are composite materials, bone, stone, and masonry among others. Usually, copper finds use in making these commodities in different areas.

There are many sizes of hip-knobs that can meet any needs and preferences. In some cases, their sizes are very small so that they can be fitted on cutleries like spoons and utensils. Sometimes there sizes are very large that they make integral parts of buildings and similarly big structures. Also, they can be made in any shape the manufacturer wants. For example, they can assume the form of human beings, heavenly bodies, geographical features, automotive, plants, and animals.

It is also possible to use hip-knobs for other purposes other than just decoration. For instance, these structures can be designed in a way that they serve as lightning arrestors. Usually, they are made with the correct structures to allow them to conduct electricity from lighting into the ground.
