An IEP is simply an individualized education program. It is a document that defines the scope of education and other services for a child with special needs who has been enrolled to a public school. Each of them is designed and customized with the aim of meeting the unique needs of the student. The first step in the creation of this document is to establish that indeed the child suffers from some form of disability that warrants special education. Referrals by school professionals are also permissible as long as there is parental consent.

As soon as the parents have consented, the evaluation process can be undertaken. The results of this exercise are important as they will determine whether the child qualifies or not. If the child is identified as being disabled, they will, to a large extent, dictate the kind of special education that will be provided. In some cases, parents may disagree with the results in which case they can benefit from an independent evaluation.

A child that is determined to be disabled and eligible for the program needs to have their IEP written within thirty calendar days. The school will schedule a meeting involving all the players which include experts in special needs education. Parents should be informed of the date and location as well as the identity of all the persons that will be invited.

The IEP has a number of things within it. They concern the current situation and the desired outcomes. For instance, it captures the performance of the child in the current program by analyzing results from tests and examinations as well as other performance indicators. Annual goals are then set to assess future progress. Short term bench marks are included so as to have frequent assessments. The special requirements for the child have to be clearly stated here.

The school leadership needs to make sure that all the instructions are carried out as stated in the document. One of the ways of making sure that this happens is to make copies and to avail them to all the important stakeholders. Without teamwork, the objectives of this program may not be achieved.
