What New Heavy Metal Music To Listen To

By Lisa West

Many people have heard of Belphegor because of how successful many of their eleven albums have been over the course of their long career. Hailing from Australia, this band has long been working on the formula for the perfect song in this genre, and they have established their style as one of the definitive sounds in new heavy metal music. "Apophis - Black Dragon" is a great song of theirs to check out because it exemplifies the intense rhythms and heroic melodies that they are known for.

Many people were moved when Body Count dropped the single "No Lives Matter". The passion and frustration that Ice-T has about the social issues described in the song really shows. This takes the listener on an energetic journey that gets them just as frustrated as him.

There is something special about taking the musical instruments of one legend in a genre and making something entirely new with them. That is what Jeremy Wagner of Broken Hope set out to do when he acquired a bunch of the guitars the Jeff Hanneman when he was in Slayer. Jeremy recorded songs like "The Carrion Eaters" and all of the album Mutilated and Assimilated with these guitars.

For fans who have a taste for the distasteful, the entire Forever album by Code Orange is a great thing to listen to. The title track from this album has the ability to create chaos wherever it is played. This is because of the frenetic rhythms and sudden stops, then blasts of distorted sound that take the listener on a thrilling ride of all their worst nightmares and most violent thoughts.

Nothing is better than when a band really finds a way to capture its beloved sound again after it may have left them for a number of years, or for them to find an all-new sound entirely that works for them and their audience. This is how the band DragonForce finds itself on their album Reaching into Infinity. It's hard not to feel triumphant when listening to "Ashes of the Dawn".

"Die With Integrity" by Dying Fetus is a great song to thrash out to for those who love to be in the mosh pit. It has all of the intensity that fans expect from this type of song. At the same time, it also feels like a throwback to the songs that started this genre.

There are plenty of dark bands to look into from Norway. One of the favorites of many is called Enslaved, and they have been playing songs about Vikings and rituals for a long time now. "Storm Son" is one of their absolute masterpieces, and it takes listening to it with headphones on, over a quality sound system, or live to hear everything that they put into this barbaric song.

It is hard for a band to find a new frontman, especially when fans have grown to love them. The death of Oderus Urungus, AKA Dave Brockie, left GWAR without a singer. Fortunately, Blothar has been able to handle the material, and he really shines on "F--ck This Place".
