Without An Ophthalmologist Washington DC Patients May Face Blindness

By Jessica Ellis

Nobody will argue the fact that sight is one of the most valuable and useful gifts any human can hope to have. Those that cannot see or that see very poorly are inevitably excluded from many of the most precious gifts of life. Just think how it would be to be dependant upon others to help one move around, to perform ordinary tasks and to forsake many pleasures associated with sight. Without an ophthalmologist Washington DC patients are more apt to be in this terrible situation

There is still widespread misunderstanding about the roles different vision role players fulfil. Many people still think that ophthalmologists, opticians and optometrists are all just different names for the same thing. This is not so. Opticians are, in fact, technicians. They are trained to create and fit vision devices such as glasses and contact lenses. They do not deal with patients and they are not qualified to make any form of diagnosis.

Optometrists deal directly with the patients, but their field narrows down to primary vision care. They can test vision, identify certain problems and treat certain conditions. They are not doctors, however. Their role is to manage the vision of their patients, to prescribe corrective devices such as spectacles and contact lenses and to advise their patients on the care of their eyes. When a vision problem is beyond there competencies, they refer the patient to a specialist.

Ophthalmologists are specialists that are qualified to treat any disease or condition that has to do with vision. They must first qualify as medical doctors. Thereafter, they undergo up to eight years of specialist and practical training. They are licensed to practice both medicine and surgery. They perform operations, prescribe medication and diagnose a wide variety of conditions that affect the vision of their patients.

Specialists can do much to correct vision problems but every individual should take good care of their own eyes. If certain symptoms manifest themselves, help should be sought immediately. These symptoms may include bulging of the eyes, double vision, distorted vision, excessive and continued redness of the eyes and constant tearing. Those with diabetes or hypertension need to be especially vigilant.

There have been amazing advances in the field of vision. Glaucoma, for example, was one of the most common causes of blindness just a few years ago. Today, this condition can be treated with a very high rate of success. Various conditions concerning the cornea are also now routinely treated. There are thousands of patients that enjoy near perfect sight thanks to the revolutionary new techniques used by specialists nowadays.

Vision problems should never be ignored. When the slightest symptoms of poor vision, pain or other problems with the eyes are experienced help should be found without delay. An optometrist can perform a basic examination and may be able to diagnose the most common problems. If they cannot determine the cause of the symptoms, they will refer the patient to a specialist.

Everyone values his sight. Without the ability to see clearly most people will have to forsake most of the activities that provide them with those pleasures that really makes life worth living. It is vital to look after the eyes, to see a professional regularly and to seek help at the very first signs of trouble.
