How Important Is Gun Safety Really

By Bob Albert Lewis

A lot of people keep firearms due to the fact that they want to protect themselves. In most cases, gun safety is not emphasized as much as gun violence is. The main issue that takes center stage is people being able to remain in control of their firearms, so that they can protect themselves.

The issue of bad guys handling firearms is usually a problem in itself, but how about how you handle your own firearm? When you handle a firearm, keep in mind that things may not always go as well as they do in movies. There are some measures that you can put in place to ensure that you protect yourself from the risk that your firearms pose.

First of all, unless you know what you are doing, you should not confront an intruder with a gun - it is better to evade and avoid. If the intruder is skilled, they can take the gun away from you and use it. Even if you do shoot them, you might end up with trauma, and even suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, which can last for months or the rest of your life.

The second major concern is keeping guns out of the reach of children - and 18 percent of parents who own a gun have never discussed gun safety with their children. This number rises to 52 percent for those who do not own a gun - but it is still important. In the first four months of 2016, 23 people were accidentally shot by toddlers. That goes up to 77 percent if we count all minors, including teenagers.

In most cases, kids end up shooting themselves. In other cases, parents and siblings are also victims. In some of the cases surveyed, the guns that the kids used belonged to guests. These accidents ended up with people dying.

Show your children how to handle firearms safely. Teach them what to do and what not to do. The most important thing is to make sure that your children cannot access your firearms. Lock them up safely to prevent accidents.
