Prior To Your Porsche 911 SC Purchase

By Raymond Butler

Ask anyone the world over, whether they be boy or girl, if they would want to drive or own a Porsche and the answer would likely be a resounding yes a majority of the time. You probably want to buy a Porsche 911 SC because not only can you afford it now, but you feel you do deserve it. Before letting go of your cash, do read on to know more about this great automobile.

The 911 SC model is the one made to replace the 911 Targa that was very much popular in the late 60s up to the late 70s of the twentieth century. SC is an acronym meaning Super Carrera to distinguish it from the revered Targa model. The SC was produced in production line from the years of 1978 to 1983. Despite its short production run, the model is still considered a very much desirable item.

In terms of body structure, there are three body styles used by the SC which are the 2 door coupe, 2 door cabriolet and 2 door Targa. There are only very subtle differences in design and such, but depending on where you live, one particular design may be more or less expensive or cheaper than the others. The later versions in 1983 was installed with a first full open top with a fabric hood option.

The engine of this model is also like previous models, that is it is being located in the boot area or back of the body. The 3. 0 liter engine and five speed transmission together dish out over 200 horsepower in torque. This huge power will launch the 911 with a boost. Also the materials making up the engine also help in the overall boost.

The engine is made of aluminum, and thus it goes without saying that it will be lighter with the same kinds of engines in its class. As aluminum is fairly heat resistant, it is designed as an air cooled engine and not radiator cooled. Thus the absence of a radiator makes the overall body weight of the 911 much lighter and thus faster. Apart from being a rear wheel drive, there are versions wherein all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive can be installed.

As has been mentioned the engine has an air cooled design and no radiator, and this fact alone will tell you if this car is for you or not. If you live in hot tropical or desert climates, then this car may not be for you. Air cooled engines fare much better and last longer in temperate and cooler climates and may not last long in extended hot and blazing weather.

Before buying, think of the possible future maintenance costs of a specialized engine. Since there are so few of these specialty cars around, you will not find factory compatible parts or generic parts abounding, and even if you do, it will still cost a pretty penny compared to regular cars. Cost is further increased as you will need to find a specially trained mechanic to do things for you, and they are not a dime a dozen.

In sum never buy a car based on initial or surface price alone. Also look at corresponding costs that you will gain in the long run, such as maintenance and discussed in this article. Always look at all the cost factors before making a final buying decision on big ticket items.
