Popular Varieties Of Blueberries Mississippi

By Stephanie Price

There are two basic types of blueberries, with several popular varieties each, which grow in Mississipi, particularly in the Southeast area. Those two types are called Rabbiteye and Southern Highbrush. Delicious and tasty, Blueberries Mississippi are widely known for their high quality and they are harvested, depending on each particular variety, from early May till September.

Rabbiteye is native to this area, and since it needs cross pollination, it is mostly grown using several different sorts, or varieties, in the same area. Different combinations result in maximum fruit set, and some of the most popular varieties used are Brightwell, Baldwin, Powderblee and, of course, Premier. The sort Tifblue is especially popular, thanks to its high quality and lovely taste.

Tifblue has beautiful, large, mid blue berries and ripening starts usually June 20. This is one of the most popular sorts, and can be harvested using machines, or manually. When it comes to chill hours, this particular sort requires five hundred and fifty to six hundred and fifty. Another interesting sort is Powderblee, which requires up to six hundred chill hours, and is appreciated because it has highest resistance to wet weather.

Centurion has a rather rare quality when it comes to blueberries, its flowers are self-fertile. The berries are medium sized, have a nice blue color and are harvested usually late in July. But, the harvesting season goes on till September. This sort can be harvested mechanically for both fresh consumed berries and those that will be frozen, but this can be applied for most varieties as well.

Brightwell has medium size, medium blue berries, with small dry scars and especially good flavor. It produces quite a large volume of fruit, and harvesting season begins June 1 in Southeast Mississippi. It requires 350 to 400 chill hours, and the variety Premier, which is vigorous, highly productive and has large, beautifully blue berries, requires approximately 550.

Other blueberry type highly popular in Mississippi area is called Southern Highbush This type also comes in different varieties, such as Reveille, Gulf Coast, Georgia Gem, Cooper or Pearl River. Most sorts ripen during May, some earlier than others. The earliest ones are probably O'Neal and Reveille. The first one is popular thanks to very large berries, as well as for especially nice flavor. This particular sort requires 400 chill hours, and early harvesting has many advantages.

Cape Fear and Reveille have lighter color and some other interesting qualities, as well as really lovely taste. When it comes to commercially highly interesting sorts, Jubilee is by all means among the most appreciated ones. This variety is easy to mechanically harvest, in one or two picks, and up to 95% of berries can be successfully picked this way. There are some sorts more suitable for yard growing, and some have special characteristics that make them especially popular or commercially interesting. For example, Reveille holds up in storage especially well.

Large, tasty berries with smaller scars and beautiful color are highly appreciated, although all sorts have their admirers. There are some varieties that hold up better in storage, some crack less in wet weather, and some have high productivity and better commercial qualities. The price depends of the beginning of the harvesting season, quality, size and color, and some other characteristics.
