Basic Information On Psycho Educational Assessment

By Steven Long

Psycho educational assessment is a set of standardized exams which evaluate the mental processes behind the educational performance of a student. These could be taken by children, teenagers and even adults to assist in identifying any hidden disabilities that could impact their academic, social and overall skills. This could help find ways in improving their learning abilities.

The teacher may have observed that your kid is having difficulties in learning particular subjects compared to his classmates and fellow students and want to do something about it. They would suggest to you and request for a psycho educational assessment Calgary to be taken. These would help identify any problems he might have. Here are things you need to prepare for during this procedure.

There are two major kinds of examinations the students will undergo. The first is testing the cognitive ability or their intelligence to understand their cognitive abilities and the potential they have. The second one is testing the academic abilities they have like oral reading, writing and math skills.

The results will then be compared in order to find any learning disability that the student may have. Other exams may be needed to be taken based on the results such as learning and memory functions, auditory processing, social skills, executive functions or academic skills. This is the reason that you are asked to see the psychologist again and again to evaluate the results and see what else needs to be done.

The school conducts these exams usually and is being helped by their resident psychologist in doing so. They will request together with parents for the assessment from the school district and they would investigate if the student needs it. This may take some time to be approved and you need to wait a few months after approval for it to be conducted.

If the approval was not granted then you have the option of getting the help of an outside registered psychologist. The advantage of asking for help from them is they are legally allowed to give a diagnosis during evaluation if the child has mental disorder. This not free though unlike the assessment being done by the school and you need to pay the psychologist a fee for this.

Behavior is observed as well during the time your kid is taking the examination in order to see if what situations cause his inattention, frustration, fatigue or delayed response. Encourage him to remain calm and collected and do his best during these exams. There should be breaks when needed during the exams.

After the exams, they will inform you if there are any potential mental disabilities and provide you with accommodation and intervention. This agreement is called Individual Educational Plan. And you must be informed with all the process together with your personal psychologist if you have one.

It is better for children to take the assessment the younger they are in order to have an earlier diagnosis and could be treated sooner. Some children even take these assessments before attending school to have better preparation. Ask for a second opinion from other registered psychologists and not only from their own school psychologist.
