For Hiking Puerto Vallarta Is The Place To Go

By Sarah Green

Canadians and Americans prefer the term hiking when referring to long, vigorous walks in the countryside along footpaths. As opposed to walking which usually occurs in urban settings and involve short distances, hiking involves very long distance in rural areas. The activity is referred to by different terms in different places. Some of the terms are rambling, hillwalking, fell walking, backpacking, and tramping. When in need of hiking Puerto Vallarta offers a good site to consider visiting.

The idea of going for hikes is an old one, tracing its origin to the 18th century. This idea came up as people changed their attitudes toward landscape and nature, in association with the Romantic movement. Before the eighteenth century, the activity was mostly associated with poverty and vagrancy. In the US, Abel Crawford cleared a path 8.5 miles long to lead to the summit of Mount Washington in 1819. The path has remained the oldest mostly used hiking trail in the country.

Long distance trails exist in many countries today. Examples include the UK National Trails, the Spanish Gran Recorrido, Grande Rota of Portugal, the US National Trail System, and the Grote Routepaden of Holland among several others. Several countries, including Belgium, Spain, France, Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, the UK, and Nepal have some of the longest trail networks.

There are several different kinds of tools and equipment people carry during a hike. The kind of equipment carried will often be determined by the length of the hike. People who go on day hikes generally bring food, water, rain-proof gear, and a map. Hiking boots are usually essential for mountain walking and backpacking. Maneuvering rough terrain require protection gear and some sort of stability equipment.

Different hiking clubs and professionals recommend different items for the trip. In accordance to the Mountaineers club, the items that one should carry include flashlight, first aid kit, fire starter, knife, sunscreen, trekking pole, a compass, and sunglasses. Additional items recommended by other groups are an emergency blanket, a hat, gloves, and insect repellent. For additional guidance, GPS navigation devices, and route cards should be carried.

Hikers cause a lot of environmental impact because they like to venture out in huge numbers. One of the major impacts is the depletion of forests as a result of excessive firewood collection. Also, animals are forced to migrate from their natural habitats due to the influence of human presence. Longhorn sheep is one of the most sensitive animals to human presence.

To help against damage that hikers are likely to cause to the environment, rules are usually imposed on how protected areas like parks can be used. Some of the rules include a ban on use of wood fires, restriction of camping to established camp sites, imposition of quotas on number of hikers, and disposal and packing of faecal matter.

A lot of impact is caused to the environment by human waste since it causes contamination to watershed and diseases in people. That led to the invention of catholes, which must be located a minimum of 60 meters away from sources of water. One must also make the hole deep and then cover it up after use.
